Why do we need to detox?

Well for starters, the average person has 700 toxins in their body! This is from a lifetime of breathing in toxins, using chemical laden personal care products, pesticide and fungicide ridden food, and radiation which is worse than ever before. And that’s just some of the exotoxins – external toxins.

Then there’s the endotoxins which are produced from the inside out, for example waste products from bacteria which produces toxins.

Even healthy people produce endotoxins and some level of exposure is healthy for you, as it helps get your body stronger. You just want to minimise it. It helps you upregulate glutathione. If you exercise too much you have more endotoxins and more stress on the body. This is why it’s important to have break days.

A constant, daily barrage of these harmful substances can overwhelm even the healthiest of bodies. And the longer one is exposed to a poison, the longer it will take to detox from it.

Why are toxins harmful?

Unfortunately These toxic substances are attracted to and easily stored in fat tissue. The longer one is exposed to a toxin, the higher the level of that substance in your fat tissue. And the more fat tissue, the more toxins can land in it, where they can happily stay for years.

Toxins are not stored only in our fat tissue, though. They can be stored in organ tissue—our brains, hearts, reproductive organs, livers, kidneys, pancreases, and skin.

Toxins and chemicals can suppress our natural responses and immune system. Our immune system is our defence mechanism against poisons entering the body. The liver is our main organ of detoxification, and a fully functional liver supports our immune system. They also cause free radicals that destroy the cells of the body and bind to cytokines (immune system information pathways), damaging them and resulting in weakened immune system responses.

They can cause inflammation (cancers, bowel disorders, respiratory disease, heart disease, and kidney disease can all be linked to the inflammatory process).

Chemicals = toxins. Toxins = disease.

Your brain cannot hide from these chemicals either. Remember that these chemicals love fat, and your brain contains a large percentage of fat, so these chemicals will easily target it. Symptoms can include attention deficit, memory loss, confusion, and difficulty. Chemicals and toxins also destroy the immune system.

There are over 85,000 industrial chemicals available for use today. The Environmental Protection Agency has mandated safety testing for only a small percentage of these chemicals. While our bodies have a natural cleansing system, our bodies’ detoxification system simply cannot keep up with this toxic burden. This makes it critical to take steps to cleanse the body of these toxins.

What happens when you detox?

Sometimes when you start a detox you may feel a bit ‘ugh’ for a few days. Headachy, fatigued, grumpy and achy. This is because toxins are being flushed from your system, or because you haven’t had your morning coffee. Probably both. That’s ok. It’s called the healing crisis.

Some also call these reactions ‘die-off’, not because you feel like your dying, but because through detoxing, you’re starving nasty bacteria of their food sources like sugar and they are not happy about it. They will try to trick your brain into feeding them by sending messages to it so it thinks it really needs some “insert junky food craving like chips or chocolate”.

Sometimes things have to get worse before they get better. But they will get better. It’s all part of the healing process.

If you want to get a true benefit from a detox, plan and prepare. Look at the foods and drinks you need to be replacing and gently do it. If you’re drinking 5 cups of coffee per day, all of a sudden having none will be very difficult on the body, so over the course of a couple of weeks wean off them.

If you do get a headache or other symptoms, avoid ingesting more chemicals and try to treat it gently with cold compresses, lavender, peppermint tea, and rest.

After a detox, the negative symptoms will go away and you will be left with clearer skin, sparkly eyes, shiny hair, less bloat, and weight loss, something we all desire!
